Hebrew Poetry

[Under construction]

In Job we see “poetic devices” commonly attributed to “Hebrew poetry” that also predominant in Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Solomon, and the prophets ─ major and minor. Yet, with neither rhyme nor meter in either the English or the original languages.

This “poetry” generally consists of “couplets of Truth” – either two lines articulating synonymous truths in different words, or two lines contrasting antithetical truths also in different words ─ for example:

“For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth” (Job 19:25).

“The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit” (Pro 12:5).

The science of Hebrew poetry over the centuries has determined other minor variant protocols by systematically dissecting and analyzing Scripture.

Yet the fundamental “couplets of Truth” overwhelmingly predominates ─ but what does it mean? The science of Hebrew poetry is nothing more than a way to NOT answer that question!

Yet, Scripture holds the answer:

“In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2Co 13:1).

This is the mandate of Scripture! If God holds man to this standard—how much more will He hold Himself to that same standard by authenticating His Word “In the mouth of two or three witnesses. “Couplets of Truth” appear to be two of the three.
